Every dog is different, but coat type is the biggest clue to how often your dog needs a groom. Here's a simple rule of thumb.
Coats that keep growing
Poodles, doodles, spoodles, Maltese, Shih Tzus and similar breeds have hair that keeps growing. Most do best with a full groom every 4 to 8 weeks. Leave it longer and knots and matting start to build up, especially behind the ears, under the legs and around the collar.
Double coats
Huskies, Golden Retrievers, Labradors, Shepherds and Corgis have a thick undercoat that sheds heavily, especially as the weather warms up. A de-shedding treatment every 6 to 12 weeks removes loose undercoat and helps keep them cool. Double coats shouldn't usually be shaved.
Short coats
Short-coated dogs don't need haircuts, but a bath & tidy every 6 to 12 weeks keeps their coat and skin healthy.
Nails
Most dogs need their nails trimmed every 3 to 6 weeks. If you can hear clicking on the floorboards, it's time for a nail clip.
Puppies
Start early! A gentle puppy intro groom once vaccinations are done helps your puppy learn that grooming is nothing to worry about.
